Summer Cocktails June 28 2018

Rig Tig Emma Pitcher Red Sail        Jacoben's Salt Co Finishing Salt Set Red Sail

One of our favorite new items in the shop from the Danish line RIG-TIG is the sleek Emma Pitcher. This attractive and sturdy steel pitcher makes mixing up a batch of mojitos at your next barbecue a cinch! (We suggest using a marble-tipped walnut muddler for perfectly crushed mint.) We're particularly fond of this classic mojito recipe, and when it feels like a tequila kind of evening, this strawberry margarita recipe is just the ticket. Pro tip: Pick up a set of finishing salts to up your cocktail game with flavored salt rims.

Planting Happiness April 09 2018

Spring has officially arrived (yay!), and our homes are finally getting more sunlight. We're celebrating this slow return of warmer weather here at the shop by stocking a plethora of planters this season. Below we've complied our favorite plant/planter combinations... these beauties make delightful gifts for Mother's Day and housewarmings, and are sure to perk up your own living room or office year round.

Pigeon Toe Two Tone Tripot Planter      String of Pearls      Casey Sibley Fabric Bucket      Dragon tree

For a universally pleasing plant, we'd pot senecio rowleyanus (string of pearls) in this two tone planter from Pigeon Toe Ceramics. The succulent's quickly growing spherical leaves will look luxurious draped over the matte ceramics of the planter. For a larger option, place dracaena marginata (dragon tree) in its pot inside this canvas bucket from Casey Sibley. It will look fantastic atop a bookshelf in a sunny house. A modern linear planter from Andrew Molleur will highlight the small, glossy leaves of radermachera sinica (china doll) in your sunniest windowsill. This clean lines of this planter fit nicely in a bathroom, entryway, or mudroom.

China doll plant      Andrew Molleur Block Planter      Pancake plant      Hasami Small Planter Sand

For space-saving options, Hasami's slender matte planter paired with pilea peperomioides (pancake plant), a petite plant with flat round leaves, will fit in the smallest of spots. A set of teakwood and brass cachepots are pretty containers for a trio of air plants. They can be grouped for effect or dotted throughout a room to bring a look together. For the ultimate in design and organization, the speckled surface of Stak Ceramic's planter/phone dock is the ideal contrast to the glossy, smooth leaves of crassula ovata (jade plant). (Bonus: the planter has a place for your phone to dock with a hidden slot for your charger, along with an extra compartment for pens, paperclips, or post-its.) Give this wonder to the recent graduate or your favorite professional to brighten up their office or studio.

Roost Cachepot      Air plants      Stak Ceramics Sprout Planter      Jade plant

Where do you get these plants, you may ask? We have a few garden shops that we like to frequent: Garden Fever, Thicket, and Pistils are all in the neighborhood. For a large selection, Portland Nursery and the lesser known Tony's Garden Center have never steered us wrong. Just remember, if you've chosen a planter from our lovely selection ahead of gifting time, pick up the plant close to the date or plan to tend it until you take it to its new home.

The Art of Keeping Cozy January 18 2018

With a widespread chill in the air following nationwide low temperatures, we're desperately seeking cozy and we suspect you're right there along with us. After some thoroughly enjoyable research, we've found the secret to keeping the chill at bay whether staying indoors or venturing out into the cold: a combination of soft scarves and blankets with warm beverages.

Luvhaus Galaxy Shino Tumbler Red Sail       Kinross Ombre Fringe Cashmere Scarf Red Sail        Nado Horo AM Kettle Red Sail

There's nothing wrong with hiding from the weather every now and then, and a warm mug of tea and your favorite blanket is the ideal mix to attaining cozy while staying in. Brew yourself a cup of tea in a generously-sized pot and drink it from a hand-thrown rounded tumbler, it will warm you inside and out as you cradle it in your palms. Tuck up under a soft lambswool throw made in Ireland, where the winters are also cold and lingering, and read your favorite book or binge watch your current TV obsession. (Can we say The Crown, anyone?)

Twig Eloise Quinel Lambswool Throw Red Sail        Luvhaus Soda Tumbler Red Sail         Yarnz Outer Space Cashmere Scarf Red Sail

If you must venture outside into the cold, wrap yourself up in a surprisingly lightweight neutral cashmere scarf or a slightly thicker colorful option before donning your coat, hat, and gloves. Be sure to take a break from the weather and duck into a local spot for coffee or tea. Our faves here on Alberta are Barista, Proud Mary, Townshend's Teahouse, and Random Order Pie Bar. Once you get home, put the kettle on and invite some friends over for an evening to warm your spirits and you'll be set! And thankfully spring is but a few short months away.

Back to Work (and School) September 08 2017

September has arrived and autumn is steadily approaching. Though it may feel like summer just got here, we're looking forward to the coming fall with its cooling weather, lightweight scarves and sweaters, and many pots of tea. And with the excitement of summer vacations, warm weddings, and sunny weekends coming to an end, we're ready to share with you a few ways to breathe new life into your daily work and school routines with some indispensable items from the shop.

Matt & Nat Cassidy Loom Briefcase  Kinross Cashmere Ombre Fringe Scarf    Baggu Duck Tote Bag Grid Pattern

The single most important piece that makes life easier is a fail-proof bag. Our favorite work bag of the season is a gorgeous briefcase from Matt & Nat that would tempt Mary Poppins herself with its organizational potential. With a removable crossbody strap and room for a 13" laptop, it's our go-to choice for work or class. Inside this bag we keep a modern laser-etched wallet that can double as a wristlet clutch for quick coffee runs and evenings out, though you might prefer the impressive capacity of this classic bifold wallet instead. Also, if you're often running between multiple appointments like us, we recommend having a secondary bag at your disposal (like this cotton duck tote bag with a leather pouch inside) to organize lunch, workout gear, super-cute notebooks, and date-night earrings

Bellroy Hide and Seek Black Leather WalletTakenaka Expanded Double Bento Box      Acme Eames Dots Business Card Holder

We've got a few more essentials to add to your daily arsenal, both classic and unusual, to stay on schedule and ready for the unexpected. A lightweight cashmere scarf is essential for the unpredictable weather and lingering air-conditioning of fall. Pick up one in a soft tone for a gentle pop of color year-round. Keep your keys within easy reach and look put-together with a grown-up leather key fob that easily clips to your bag, belt loop, or wristlet strap. For those of us who carry business cards, an etched chrome card case brings your look up a notch, and is slim enough to fit in a large wallet. For particularly long days or eating on the run, follow our example and pack your lunch in an organized bento box (don't forget the travel chopsticks). Not only will you save money on eating lunch out, you'll also get to avoid using disposable utensils. And now that we've all had a tasty lunch, it's time for an afternoon nap. If only we had a pillow in our bag...

New Designers in the Shop! August 09 2017

Here at Red Sail, we're always on the hunt for new designers, and this month our hard work has paid off. Five new designers have recently made their debut in our shop and we couldn't be more excited about it. Read on below to learn a little about each new designer and the amazing pieces they create.

Totem’s ceramic stoneware pieces are inspired by natural forms, simplicity, and traditional craft. As each item is handmade in their Berkeley studio, no two pieces are alike. The dishes and mugs they crafted for us feature a velvet crackle finish, lending depth to the surface of simplistic shapes. Pick up a wide mug with a tea jar and stirring spoon, and give the set to your tea-loving friend along with their favorite tea for instant gift success. See all their beautifully crafted pieces here.

Natalie Joy Miller used her experience with small-scale sculpture and hand-made jewelry to create Natalie Joy Jewelry in 2010. Every piece from her architectural line is made by hand in her Portland studio, using both traditional and unique metal-working techniques. We especially love her ladder-like Aventine bracelet and her minimalist square hoop earrings. These striking pieces play equally nicely with jeans and a tee or a little black dress. Fionna Hanna is a Toronto based textile designer and maker. The materials for her linen and hemp scarves are sourced from small businesses in Canada and the US. She stamps block-prints of grid patterns of major cities on each scarf, creating an abstract, graphic design ideal for unisex styling. Layer your look with her New York, Toronto, or Paris infinity scarves.

Woolly leather combines modern minimalism and old school craft to create beautiful wallets and leather accessories. Sourcing only US vegetable-tanned leather, each item they design is laser cut prior to hand stitching in their Portland studio, creating a perfectly finished, ruler-straight edge on every well-made wallet. We are particularly delighted with their ingenious stick-on phone wallet. 3M adhesive on the back means you can stick and re-stick it to your phone without leaving any residue behind. They also offer a fresh take on the classic money clip by placing it on a lightweight minimalist wallet. Check out all of their offerings right here.

Ayu Carlton started making sophisticated goods for a modern organic lifestyle in LA in 2016. Vegan and organic, her gorgeously scented candles use a special coconut/soy wax blend and feature wooden wicks for an extra touch of goodness. Can't decide between Bohemian Forest, Cherry Blossom, Japanese Yuzu, or White Tea? Get a travel tin in each scent. (She also offers a large glossy jar candle.)

If you're in town, we'd love it if you stopped by to see these pieces in person. For our out of town friends, we've gathered these beauties along with many more new pieces for your shopping pleasure in the new arrivals section of our website. Happy shopping!

Secrets to a Relaxing Backyard Barbecue June 28 2017

Barbecue season is in full swing and we bet you're as excited as we are for its arrival. After all, there's not much better than relaxing in the sun with good food, good drinks, and good friends, is there? This time of year provides the perfect excuse to try out new recipes and up your cocktail game, and is also freely used as a reason to acquire new pretties for the yard. After all, you'll want a relaxing setting for the many sunny afternoons and warm evenings you'll spend there with your loved ones. We highly suggest picking up this translucent green votive set and sprinkling them about the yard for soft illumination. A brass constellation lantern is also ideal for lighting up evenings. (Pro tip: place an LED light inside to avoid replacing a candle regularly.) We also think you'll quickly become enamored with these unglazed porcelain wind chimes, they've got such a soothing tone when they sway in the breeze.

There's something so refreshing about cocktails full of fresh fruit and herbs on sunny afternoons, and you'll be reaching for a trusty walnut and marble muddler frequently to make a whiskey-strawberry or gin-basil cocktail. To save time, you can also use the convenient pitcher-size muddler to make a batch of margaritas with this fine-tuned recipe from Alton Brown, and for an extra kick finish the cocktails with habanero salt. Whichever cocktail you choose, make things easy on yourself and get a colorful wooden tray to carry your tools and ingredients. For get-togethers on the fly, fill up a stoneware growler with your favorite beer or cider on the way home. Of course, keep everyone hydrated by placing water in an attractive bottle, like this crystal clear carafe or this porcelain and clay bottle flask.

Now to the main event: food. We suggest going potluck style to maximize your relaxation time. Offer a summer salad and some grilled veggies, ask your friends to bring their favorite summer dish, and you're set. Use these life-changing tips for grilling any vegetable to perfection ahead of time and serve them on a beautiful reclaimed walnut serving board. Showcase a farro and roasted red pepper salad using veggies from your garden in a creamy wide flat bowl with a cherry wood serving set. Sprinkle an authentic German potato salad with black garlic salt or a roasted beet salad with lemon finishing salt just before serving for extra depth of flavor. To keep your place-settings pretty and your clean-up easy, we recommend using brightly colored bamboo plates and silicone placemats, both lightweight and a cinch to wash. Use the time you saved with our tips to linger over a game of backgammon or dominoes while you watch the last rays of sunlight fade from the day.

Graduation Gift Guide June 07 2017

It's officially June, the month of summer solstice, sunny skies, and graduation parties. If you're lucky enough to have a happy graduate in your life, it falls on you to select a fantastic gift for their rite of passage. To help you with this task, we've gathered a list of the most desirable graduation gifts so you can choose the right one for your graduate.
Son of A Sailor Sertodo Shot Board at Red Sail   Portland Growler Company Loop Handle Growler at Red Sail
For celebratory gifts, we suggest a solid brass bottle opener, "You've Earned It" emblazoned on its side, for a constant reminder of success. If they prefer beverages on tap to bottled varieties, consider a stylish opaque growler, useful for years to come. For the ultimate in celebration, a rich walnut shot board accompanied by four hand-hammered copper shot glasses makes an ideal option for the soon-to-be networker or host. For extra fun, add a bottle of tequila with some limes and Jacobsen's salt so they can try out their gift right away.

Many graduations happily coincide with a sparkly new job and the opportunity for a wardrobe update. One must for professional life is office appropriate jewelry that can transition flawlessly to happy hour, such as these delicate nude porcelain earrings, or this minimal adjustable silk and gold bead necklaceFor extra good luck on their new job, gift a tiny horseshoe pendant that they can wear daily. A sizable-yet-cool tote to hold their electronic devices and other daily needs is also a coveted gift. Since offices really crank up the air conditioning regardless of the season, giving your graduate a watercolor printed scarf to keep in their tote will help them stay warm and can complement everything from important presentation ensembles to casual Friday looks. If the new hire is biking to work a professional backpack will have them looking like a pro when they arrive for the day. (We love this backpack, too). They can complete their put-together appearance with a stylish, washable lunch bag, since we're sure they'll be packing their own lunch like real adults.

If your reigning graduate has moved to a new city or office, we have plenty of options to help decorate. Remind them of home with a circular map of Portland (paired with a map of their new city to show your support). Alternately, if their walls could use extra life, opt for a handmade porcelain hanging planter paired with a delicate air plant. For those individuals who have a propensity for spending too many hours at the office, you can bring some greenery to their space with a minimal ribbed bud vase for flowers or a simple geometric wooden planter set with succulents. Finally, start their collection of grown-up furniture with a gorgeous mid-century modern table lamp for the gift they'll adore for years and years.
Pigeon Toe Ceramics Ribbed Bud Vase at Red Sail Caravan Pacific Sullivan Table Lamp at Red Sail
For those of us gift-givers who are always pressed for time, or think that our recent graduate needs some post-schooling retail therapy, we suggest a Red Sail gift certificate for a sure way to please (psst...these can be used both at our Portland store and online). No matter what gift you select and send, we think you're set for success. Now let's all sit back, have a drink, and toast to life's big (and little) victories.

    Mother's Day Gift Guide April 25 2017

Mother's Day is nearly upon us (May 14th this year), and whether you're getting a gift for your mom, wife, or simply treating yourself, we've got you covered with our favorite gifts for Mom.

For the ultimate breakfast in bed, choose a stylish graphic print tray from Wolfum, and load it up with everything she'll need for her meal. A rounded cream-colored teapot, handmade tumblers, a cherry wood honey stick, and smooth ceramic honey jar make the perfect tea setup. Set a brass pie server atop a printed napkin to serve an easy yet tasty quiche, and for added beauty, fill a dotted vase with her favorite blossoms.

If the mom in your life juggles a career with her many other responsibilities, we suggest going for accessory combinations that can pull double duty. Pair a printed scarf with a petite bronze cuff for instant style. A soft grey wool felt and leather tote is a guaranteed success, plus it can hold all of her work files and iPad (this leather sleeve is our favorite). Finishing touches come in the form of a brushed brass hair tie and minimalist business card holder.

Of course nothing beats a beautiful letterpress card letting Mom know how much you love her... we have dozens to choose from in the shop right now!

Earth Day Everyday April 20 2017

Earth Day may only come once a year, but we want to celebrate the many designers we work with that encourage us to observe it all year long with their stylish environmentally sound products. Some of our favorites include:

    Baggu’s portable grocery bags
Casey Sibley’s waxed canvas market totes
    Fluf’s washable lunch bags
Portland Growler Company’s beer and kombucha growlers
Graf Lantz for creating totes and useful objects from sustainable wool felt
Matt & Nat for lining their vegan handbags and backpacks with recycled plastic bottles
Keephouse for dyeing their household linens with organic ink
Deoria Made for crafting breathtaking serving boards out of reclaimed hardwoods

    6th Annual Warm + Fuzzy Fundraiser November 22 2016

    Warm and Fuzzy Fundraiser

It's time for our 6th Annual Warm + Fuzzy Fundraiser for the Oregon Humane Society, a favorite event here at Red Sail. Between November 1st and December 24th, 2016, Red Sail is donating 15% of sales of our holiday ornaments to the Oregon Humane Society. Gus (our adorable shop dog and all around fantastic Vizsla) gives this event an enthusiastic tail wag of approval!  Why not send your loved ones an ornament for the holidays to let them know you're thinking about them? Shop online or in the store between November 1st and December 24th to make your purchases count.

If you're not familiar with the Oregon Humane Society, they are an incredible organization that helped over 11,000 animals last year, and have an amazing 98% adoption rate! This organization is run completely on donations, and as animal lovers, we love to support their incredible efforts.

Color Trend | aubergine, mint, grey October 09 2016

I do so love the changing of seasons. The weather allows me to unearth my favorite soft layering pieces and suddenly I feel a strong desire to sip a mug of cider while watching the rain, possibly while nestled under this luxurious throw from Twig. Now that we're officially into autumn, we're definitely on our way to cooler weather. To keep this admittedly dark season enjoyable for as long as possible, I like to brighten things up with splashes of fresh color in my home and personal style. Currently I'm obsessed with rich, saturated purples and light, cool greens. These tones, whether called aubergine and mint, plum and sea glass, or eggplant and mist, look fabulous in the fading light of fall and will remain beautiful all year round.

Color Trend Mint Aubergine Grey Copper

Since statement colors can be powerful, they'll transition easier into an already existing wardrobe and house if paired with a neutral accent color, like saddle brown, to ground them. Pairing this Molly M aubergine pouch with copper, as seen in this modern butterfly hair tie from Caravan Pacific, leads to effortless chic. A plum dress gains a little gravity with a dove gray accent like this Circle Purse from Baggu. Baggu also offers their classic tote in sea glass, the perfect combination of professional and fresh in this hue, and pairing it with the warm grey of this iPad case will keep you looking like the cool professional you are during those important meetings.

Color Trend Mint Purple Grey Home

On the decor side, mint and aqua tones benefit from the addition of pale woods or cream porcelain. The fir in this boxcar planter provides the ideal base for the accents of color on the sides. Placed on your desk along with Pigeon Toe's abstract coasters featuring hints of greens and purple and their Tripod planter with a neutral exterior and glazed interior, you can transform your office into an oasis. A key piece for brightening up your home, the Sullivan lamp from Caravan Pacific with sleek lines and cool maple detailing, is available in both dove grey and mint, as is the porcelain splatter vase from Bean and Bailey. You can combine these pieces to make either grey or mint the focal point of your room.

Whether choosing accessories or home goods, plums or mints, let's bring in autumn in a fresh and delightful fashion. Find all of these, and more of our favorite accessories and home decor, in this color trend here. Happy harvest, everyone!

Secrets to Successful Trip Packing July 15 2016

We absolutely love vacations: whether they're 3 or 4 days to relax, or longer to reacquaint ourselves with our favorite people or cities. What we don't love is packing for a vacation. Thus we've spent many hours in life perfecting our packing Tetris skills. Along the way, we've picked up a few tricks and avoid the messy end of the business when we actually follow them. Our first packing tip is simple: bags inside your bag will make your life infinitely easier. Here at Red Sail, we love Owen & Fred's Stay Sharp Dopp Kit, as well as Tonic's Wash bags which are available in 2 sizes for when a trip demands even more toiletries. All of these styles are lined with washable interiors in case you arrive at your destination to find your favorite shampoo and moisturizer spent the trip getting better acquainted. To help with the organization of important documents Bellroy makes an efficient travel wallet that holds all the necessities plus your passport, tickets, and a tiny pen. For a pared-down option, the geometric design keeps this passport case from Molly M delightfully fresh.

    Tonic Toiletry Wash Bags

Another secret to packing for any trip is versatile accessories. They help fill out a simple wardrobe. If chosen wisely, you can get by with one of each of the following: necklace, earrings, scarf, and hair accessory, and if you wear them on the plane, you won't even have to pack them! Abacus Row makes a multi-tasking necklace with delicate black, ivory, pink and gold beads that has an adjustable length and can also be worn as a wrap bracelet. It pairs well with the Tiny Barnacle earrings from Daphne Olive. These are lightweight and simple enough to dress up or down as needed. For accessories to keep your hair looking good, pick up Caravan Pacific's modern hair ties. In brass or copper, these elevate a quick ponytail to effortless style. Coupled with a print scarf from Kinross Cashmere, you'll easily transition from a day of seeing the sights to an evening with good food and friends. Made of cashmere and silk, it's an attractive option for layering and warmth, perfect for chilly airplanes and air-conditioned museums.

The next tip is to bring something that makes you feel special. We recommend packing a journal and a travel candle. Choose a small journal with a leather cover like this one from Rustico for jotting down directions, memories, recipes, or favorite pieces of art from your trip. A travel candle may sound like a luxury, but we find a comforting scent is just the thing to make an AirBNB or hotel feel like home. Capri Blue offers a portable tin in their famous "volcano" scent, and the smell of sweet, tropical citrus is a quick pick-me-up.

Most importantly, be sure to choose the right size of bag for your adventure. If you are a champion of packing light, Baggu's Canvas backpack will be plenty large enough for your weekend. Bonus: it will fit under the seat in an airplane, so you won't have to juggle with the overhead compartments. If you'd like a little more room for packing, Nell and Mary offers this gorgeous hand-printed weekender with a secure zip-top and comfortable shoulder straps for traveling in style. Now that you've gotten your packing conquered, it's time to get excited for your trip. We love Design Sponge's travel section with 24 hour city guides and the pictorial inspiration on National Geographic's Instagram account. Now go forth, your adventure is waiting.

Baby is on the way! July 06 2016

So you’ve got a little one on the way. Hooray! Before the sunny baby showers and endless preparations result in that tiny bundle you've been eagerly awaiting, take the time to do this one important thing for yourself... design a nursery to be your personal retreat, filled with soft fabrics and pleasing patterns. We all know how much time you’ll spend there!

With space at a premium these days, it’s possible this room will be pulling double duty, or is a temporary appropriation. Selecting a versatile color scheme will keep you from completely redecorating the room in the future while trying to manage the ever-present inquisitive nature of a toddler. Thankfully no longer limited to the classic blue/pink binary, we’ve hit upon the pleasing aqua/grey palette.

Starting with something appropriately adorable, pick up these organic cotton hat/gown sets and burp cloths by Milkbarn featuring a very happy whale. These use the sweet classic of animal in a pleasing neutral palette. Continuing on with the irresistibly cute, Manny and Simon make fantastic push toys. This aqua bunny will be sitting pretty on a shelf until your little one is on the move. The modern ink blot print on this fabric bin from Pehr hides a sturdy wire frame that can take anything you can throw in it during a lightning-speed cleaning session. For that little something for yourself, Brahms Mount makes the yummiest throws, like this soft all season cotton one, conveniently machine washable. Wrap up in its comfort during a 3am feeding and snuggle session. As your tiny one grows up, this throw can be a sweet reminder of those first steps in one of the most beautiful relationships possible.

Summer Happy Hour July 03 2016

Summer has arrived in Portland, pleasantly early this year, and we’ve found the best thing to beat the heat, an impromptu backyard cocktail hour with friends. Pro tip: make sure to choose the friend with the coolest backyard to host. They’ll be delighted to show off their hard work and everyone else can bring ingredients for the fabulous cocktails.

     muddler

Along with all the fixings for a perfect mojito, you'll want to make sure you've got the proper tools, so bring this hand turned, corian-tipped muddler by AHeirloom. It’s great for crushing mint and macerating limes. For crushing ice, measuring shots, and popping open bottles, use the 4-in-1 Bar Tool. Depending on the size and thirst of your gathering, a large pitcher like the modern Morandi, or slim Beyaz, both from Roost, or a smaller carafe like this simple wonder from Kinto, will help maximize relax time with effortless refills.

To provide inspiration, we’re giving you our favorite mojito recipe from Food and Wine, based on the original 1929 drink, and because one drink does not fit all, we’ve found a variation that’s a bit sweeter for those who prefer a little bubbly, along with the recipe for the mojito’s long-lost cousin, a Hemingway Daiquiri. Rumor has it Mr. Hemingway drank these by the double in pint glasses, but we love the luxurious feel of these Gold Band Glasses. Now if only our lawn chairs would spontaneously transform into hammocks, we’d really be set.

It may have taken a couple months, but I'm finally resurfacing after the holidays! And it's nearly Spring so that means it's time to talk new merchandise!

Here in Oregon, as in much of the country, Spring means crazy manic weather. One day it's 65 and sunny, the next day it's just above freezing with bursts of sleet and rain. Mother Nature, why must you toy with us like this?! We can't do much about the weather, but we can be prepared for the elements by layering with a Yarnz scarf. This line is known for their amazing designs and the Spring/Summer collection of Cashmere/Silk and Linen/Rayon scarves does not disappoint! Shop all of our scarves here

Shop Small for a BIG Win! November 26 2013

The shop is packed with AMAZING merchandise, the new web site is up and running, and our Christmas window is in place.. we are officially ready for the holidays! This month, we’re also excited to be participating again in Little Boxes, a Portland-wide shopping event that takes place the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving.

On a day traditionally dominated by big box retailers, it’s easy for independently owned small businesses to get lost in the shuffle. Three years ago, a few of the city’s boutique shop owners (including Red Sail) pooled resources to offer prizes and discounts to consumers who shopped a network of participating “Little Box” stores. This year, shoppers have the option to navigate participating shops using an iPhone app (yay, technology!), with chances to win raffle prizes including a travel package, an iPad, and a $600 shopping spree to the Little Boxes (and hey, if you miss that, there’s still a chance to win $400 or $200 sprees).  It’s free to enter; just head into any participating shop on 11/29 – 11/30 to claim a raffle ticket.  Make a purchase to earn bonus entries and unlock a 10% discount at the next Little Box on your list.  The more shops you visit, the more chances you have to win!

We believe that shopping Little Boxes is a great way to find unique gifts for everyone on your list, have fun with your family and friends, and–just maybe–win some pretty incredible prizes, all by taking a stroll in Portland’s best shopping districts.

If you’re local, we’d love to see you out and about!

Mark your calendars now! Friday, November 29th & Saturday November 30th, 10am-7pm. Plan your route and find more information at www.littleboxespdx.com/shop

    Q+A: Archie Archambault of Archie's Press November 13 2013

We all remember our firsts. Red Sail had only been open for two weeks when I got my first artist sales pitch, which happened to be from this young guy who just walked in off the street with a few postcards and prints. I still remember it because it was truly the worst sales pitch EVER, but in an adorable "I'm REALLY new at this" kind of way. It was pretty quiet that day so I said I'd take a look at the work and, wow, I'm so glad I did, because that guy was Archie Archambault, the talented designer behind Archie's Press. In the past two years he has gone from someone making a few maps here and there, to a top-notch designer traveling the country creating maps for cities coast to coast. It's been so exciting and rewarding for me to be a part of his journey as a designer and fledgling business owner, and his visits to the shop are always welcomed. Fresh off his latest mapping tour of Washington DC, Atlanta, Austin and New Orleans (Red Sail will have these maps in the next week or so), Archie gives us a peek inside with some Q+A.

Portland Map, the best seller  |  Archie while on a mapping tour this fall  | New Solar System Map

Where do you find inspiration for your designs?

Whenever I make a city map, I find the most inspiration from the city itself. Stylistically, I draw inspiration from any form of experimental information systems. These are littering the internet, but a few names that come to mind are Nicholas Felton, Rem Koolhaas and Pinterist.

What’s the most rewarding part of your job?

Traveling is the most exciting part of my job. Every new city provides a new set of challenges that I can't help decode with a long walk or a bike ride while I consume the fruits of every city's culture.

What’s your greatest challenge as a designer right now?

I'm really afraid of falling into a formula. I'd hate to be pigeonholed as someone who doesn't provide a lot of thought into the work they produce.

What’s a little known fact about your collection that you wish more people realized?

My work is aimed at producing the clearest and most truthful representation of a city. I'm not just making something that looks cool. The goal is something truly useful, a map straight from the mind.

What's in the pipeline right now? Any sneak peeks or upcoming projects you want to share?

Right now I've got 4 new maps to release and they're almost done. It's keeping me on my toes. Next year I hope to do a mapmaking tour of Hawaii, San Diego, LA, Vegas, Salt Lake, Denver, Aspen, Omaha, Des Moines, Minneapolis, Madison, Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland and Pittsburgh. We'll see how far I get! Also looking for an adventure-mobile for the voyage. Know anyone with a Vanagon for sale?!

What are you listening to in the studio while you’re working?

It changes every week, but The Current from Minnesota Public Radio is the greatest radio station I know of.

What is the #1 piece of advice you’d share with an aspiring designer?

Don't Despair! You're going to come up with hundreds of terrible ideas, but the gems make it worthwhile. Delegate responsibility. You can't do everything yourself. There aren't enough hours in the day.

The work day is done! Where is your favorite place to unwind?

Anywhere with good food, so anywhere in Portland.

New in the Shop November 07 2013

It's always exciting to bring a new collection into the shop, and this week it was the work of LA-based designer I. Ronni Kappos. This colorful deco-inspired jewelry line caught my eye when I visited New York in August, and it's now available in the shop and at our online store. Here are two of my favorites, but you can see all of the available pieces here.

    3rd Annual Warm + Fuzzy Fundraiser November 05 2013

It's time for our favorite event here at Red Sail, our Warm + Fuzzy Fundraiser for the Oregon Humane Society. This year to support our favorite four-legged friends, Red Sail is donating 15% of sales of our holiday ornaments to Oregon Humane Society. Shop online or in the store between November 1st and December 24th, 2013 to make your purchase count! Last year Red Sail was able to donate $1036, and this year we hope to blow that number away, but we need you help! Shop our ornaments now!

    Q + A: Christine Fail of Fail Jewelry November 04 2013

Every so often I get super lucky and come across a line that is truly a perfect fit for Red Sail, and that's exactly what happened when I discovered Fail jewelry while roaming the booths of Chicago's Renegade Craft Fair in September for 2012. I immediately fell in love with the line's simple mixed metal designs, and as soon as the first order arrived in the shop Red Sail customers fell in love too... the pieces are irresistible! Below, Austin-based designer Christine Fail gives us the scoop on her collection with some Q+A.

Bestseller - Crescent Hoops   |   Designer Christine Fail   |   personal fav - Deco Layering Necklace

Where do you find inspiration for your designs?

So many places!  Usually it is from my friends and the women in my life.  I am so fortunate to know so many creative and expressive women. They are the types setting trends instead of following them and I am naturally influenced by our conversations, our interests in art, architecture, music, and of course their personal style.

What’s the most rewarding part of your job?

Getting to design, make jewelry, and be creative all day (or at least most of the day)! And honestly, being the boss and getting my way is pretty nice too.

What’s your greatest challenge as a designer right now?

Finding the right people to help me grow my business. As someone who runs a small business, you really are the one who does everything from design to marketing to accounting.  However, to really grow I have to start being able to find people who can act on my behalf, whom I can trust, and who know exactly what I want without me even telling them.

What’s a little known fact about your collection that you wish more people realized?

As a result of my background in metal-smithing, a hammer touches all of my pieces.  Because each piece starts out as wire or sheet, and the form is created by cutting and hammering, each piece is truly unique. Because of my past studio limitations, I chose not to solder or use cast pieces in my designs and relied solely on what are called, cold-connection.  Having to rely on cold connections only has really pushed me forward in the design process.  I have to be more innovative and creative with my technique and style, so that I can set myself apart from other designers.  It has also helped keep a diversity in price-points within the collection so that I can keep my collection affordable and attainable.

What's in the pipeline right now? Any sneak peeks or upcoming projects you want to share?

I have a few projects in the works!  In May I closed the doors on my small retail shop here in Austin so that I could exclusively focus on fail.  Now that I have moved into my new dedicated studio behind my house, I am finally getting more time to devote to design. I am excited to launch both a home accessories collection as well as a contemporary bridal collection within the next year!

What are you listening to in the studio while you’re working?

Old country and blues. I like songs with a little grit, a good story, and that you can sing along to.

What is the #1 piece of advice you’d share with an aspiring designer?

Build a community of artists, makers, and designers around you that you admire and respect. Having advice, support, guidance and inspiration is so important as a small business owner. As a group, you can all build each other up so that you can all grow together.

The work day is done! Where is your favorite place to unwind?

In the kitchen, cooking dinner with my husband, enjoying a glass of wine.

What’s your favorite piece at Red Sail right now?

The Nell & Mary tote bag! I can speak from experience that it is the perfect bag for running around the city, holding my water bottle, sketch book, and various other essentials while still looking stylish! Mine is going on 1 year of continuous use and is still looks great! Bonus- its handmade in Portland!

New in the Shop This Week October 24 2013

It's really starting to look and feel like fall here in Portland. The leaves have started to pile up on the sidewalk, and soon most of the trees will be bare for the winter. Fortunately, my house plants are still going strong, and thanks to a new line here at Red Sail, Light + Ladder, I can repot them in stylish new hanging planters! These simple and modern vessels look great grouped (see the picture from my NYC buying trip), or solo. The Large Flat Back Planter is my personal favorite, but honestly it's a tough call. Decide for yourself here.

Q+A: Nicole Cipriano of Cipriano Designs October 23 2013

One of the best selling lines at Red Sail is Cipriano Designs, the beautiful leather collection from Portland-based designer Nicole Cipriano. Her work is consistently showered with customer compliments... they love the feel, they love the prints, they love the construction. Given that Nicole is one of our most popular designers, and that she happens to be one of our favorite people to work with, we wanted to share a little bit more about this amazing lady through the first installment of our new reoccurring journal segment, Q+ A.

Where do you find inspiration for your designs?

Most of my inspiration comes from architecture. I’ve always been obsessed with structural forms. I like to examine how things are held together and what happens when metal, wood or concrete merge. Designing is a very tactile process for me. I need to have the leather in my hands. There are a lot of different types of leathers, and they all take on a unique personality with each design. Once I start playing around with the leather a new idea will just come to me.

What’s the most rewarding part of your job?

It’s very rewarding when I see someone out in the world with one of my designs. It’s also rewarding when someone contacts me to say they saw one of my designs and ‘needs’ something just like it. As a designer, you want the world to appreciate your creations, and when moments like these occur, it’s just a reminder that I’m doing everything right.

What’s your greatest challenge as a designer right now?

My biggest challenge is not having enough time! I have so many ideas just bursting at the seams, but I’m too busy with production to keep up with it all.

What’s a little known fact about your collection that you wish more people realized?

Most people don’t realize that I’m a one-woman show. I design, sew, screen print and market my own product. If someone sees a bag or wallet they’re interested in, it may not be in stock five months later. In a way, my leather goods are limited edition since it’s impossible for me to have all of my designs on hand all the time.

What's in the pipeline right now? Any sneak peeks or upcoming projects you want to share?

New leathers and new prints! The new print I’m refining is called ‘Texture.’ I’m bringing in a few new leather colors, and I’m working on a new bag design. I really can’t wait to complete the collection!

What are you listening to in the studio while you’re working?

I go through phases of listening to the same album over and over again, but I’m a huge fan of Audible. I love downloading audio books, but it’s all about what process I’m in in the shop. This week I’ve been listening to Lana Del Rey and James Blake. What is the #1 piece of advice you’d share with an aspiring designer?

There’s more to being a designer than just designing, so be mentally prepared to learn all the ropes of running a business. Make a list of your goals and ask a lot of questions. There are a lot of free resources out there and remember you are not alone! Most importantly, listen to your heart and don’t give up.

The work day is done! Where is your favorite place to unwind?

I always unwind by walking my dog, Chico, to the park.

What’s your favorite piece at Red Sail right now?

I’m in love with Caravan Pacific’s Alberta Table Lamp. All of the elements are pieced together beautifully. I can appreciate the flow of wood and ceramic joining forces for this creation.
